Woman, 82, found dead in Budaka pit latrine

Budaka, (UG):- The Police at Budaka District are currently investigating circumstances under which an 82-year-old woman, Nakalyesi Magret, was discovered dead in a pit latrine on the morning of Saturday, October 12, 2024, though the exact time of death remains unclear.

Nakalyesi, a resident of Naigabya village, Bwase ward, Budaka town council who was partially blind (a condition attributed to her advanced age), was reportedly found dead in a pit latrine approximately 20 feet deep, which had been dug by her neighbour, Joan Sabano, for her personal use.

SP Semewo Samuel Bukedi North Region Police Spokesperson said Monday that the local leadership was alerted to the situation by the Chairman of LC1 Naigabya village, Wasoma Dongo, who is 52 years old. Upon receiving the report, police officials promptly arrived at the scene to conduct a thorough investigation.

“A team of Scene of Crime Officers (SOCOs) and detectives meticulously documented the site and gathered necessary statements from witnesses, ensuring that all pertinent information was recorded for the ongoing inquiry,” SP Semewo said.

He added that in the aftermath of the shocking incident, police retrieved the body and transported it to Budaka Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination, which is a standard procedure in such cases to ascertain the cause of death and gather further evidence.

“As of now, no suspects have been arrested in connection with this incident, and police are actively pursuing leads,” he added.

Community members have expressed their shock and sadness over the incident, emphasizing the need for greater safety measures in the area, particularly regarding the construction and maintenance of pit latrines.

As investigations continue, the Budaka Police have urged anyone with additional information related to this case to come forward.

This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns about the safety and welfare of elderly residents in rural areas, prompting calls for community vigilance and support systems to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
