Kapelebyong excels in nationwide polio vaccination campaign

Kapelebyong, (UG);- Kapelebyong District managed to vaccinate over and above the set target of children in the just concluded five-day polio vaccination campaign.

The reports indicate that the district tremendously excelled with the district polio vaccination coverage standing at 133% of the target, triggering the health team to extend appreciation messages to the stakeholders involved in the exercise.

“We want to appreciate all stakeholders who contributed to this achievement. We continue looking out for any children under five years who could have been missed during the mass campaign,” a message from Festo Etori, the District Biostatistician, read.

The report shared, indicated that Acinga Sub County vaccinated 989 (69.9%) children, Acowa SC vaccinated 5,228 (250%), Acowa TC – 1,318 (88%), Akore TC – 1000 (85.5%) and Akoromit SC – 4546 (122.5%). The tremendous performance was also recorded in Alito SC -2,097 (117.5%), Kapelebyong SC – 4,863 (131%), Kapelebyong TC – 1920 (130.1%) and Obalanga SC 3,144 (163.2%).

Additionally, the sub-counties of Obalanga TC vaccinated 1004 (87.5%) and Okungur SC vaccinated 5,385 (143.6%). In total, the district vaccinated 31,494 against the target of 23,679 children in a period of five days.

The registered success was as a result of the engagement of various stakeholders including cultural, religious, political and technical officers in sensitising communities on the importance of polio vaccination. The district had lined up 44 teams to move from home to home to conduct the exercise.

The Polio vaccination campaign was launched by the government of Uganda after the virus was detected in Mbale. Uganda targets to vaccinate 2.7 million children against polio in Busoga, Mbale, Bukedi, Teso, Karamoja and Sebei Subregions.

The polio vaccination campaign is supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
