30-year-old fisherman drowns in Mpologoma river

Kibuku, (UG):- Authorities in Kibuku District are investigating a tragic drowning incident that occurred in Katyaime Parish, Nandere Sub-County, claiming the life of 30-year-old Kanobere Erisa.

The father of two and son of Waitire Wilber was fishing in Katyaime swamp when the small boat he was in capsized.

According to reliable sources, Erisa and his fishing companion, Kalila Joseph, 28, had ventured out onto the river that connects to the Mpologama River.

But as they returned from their fishing expedition, the boat, which was reportedly too small to safely accommodate both men, overturned, plunging them into the water.

Eyewitnesses say that while Joseph managed to cling to nearby grasses and survived, Erisa struggled to stay afloat and ultimately drowned. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety practices among local fishermen.

In an interview, Hon. Jamada Hamidu, the LC III Chairperson for Nandere Sub-County, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family. He attributed the tragedy to a lack of caution and carelessness among local fishermen.

“Several times I have been telling my people to use reasonable boats and the necessary items while on water, but they have been keeping a deaf ear, and now here comes a tragedy,” he lamented.

Chairperson Hamidu emphasized the importance of adhering to water safety guidelines, including the use of life jackets and remaining vigilant while fishing. His remarks underline a broader concern for public safety in the area, particularly in light of previous drownings in the same location.

Waitire Wilber, the father of the deceased, confirmed the tragic news, stating that his son died from near drowning. He urged the community not to speculate about the cause of his son’s death, asking for compassion during this difficult time. “Please, do not attribute my son’s death to anything else,” he said.

Erisa leaves behind a pregnant widow and two young children, aged five and three. The community is rallying together in support of the grieving family, as they navigate this devastating loss.

Local authorities have reported that police were en route to the scene to recover Erisa’s body for a postmortem examination, further highlighting the need for improved safety measures in the region’s waterways.

The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with fishing in unsafe conditions and the necessity for community awareness and education on water safety.
