Uganda’s National Team, The Cranes find themselves on the cusp of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), needing just one point from their remaining two matches this November.

Following a crucial 2-1 victory over South Sudan in Juba, the Cranes now sit atop Group K with 10 points, two ahead of second-placed South Africa.

In their next fixture, the Cranes will face South Africa at Namboole Stadium on November 11, before heading to Brazzaville to take on Congo on November 15.

The stakes couldn’t be higher, as Uganda aims to secure their spot in AFCON for the first time since 2019.

A recent match between South Africa and Congo ended in a 1-1 draw, keeping Uganda in a favourable position with 10 points, and South Africa with 8 points.

With Congo now on four points and South Sudan with no post having lost all games so far, Uganda’s path to qualification appears clear, contingent upon their performance in the upcoming matches.

In Juba, Uganda took an early lead through Denis Omedi, only for South Sudan to equalize just before halftime.

However, an own goal by Ugandan-born Alfred Leku sealed a vital victory for the Cranes, boosting their hopes of returning to AFCON for the seventh time.

The Cranes’ qualification hopes hinge not only on their own results but also on the performance of South Africa against Congo.

If South Africa falters against the bottom team, Uganda could still qualify even without securing additional points
