How police arrested key suspect in Kiboga kidnaps cases

Kiboga, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Wamala Region have confirmed the arrest of a the prime suspect allegedly involved in multiple cases of kidnapping children in Kiboga District over yet-to-be-identified reasons.

Bukenya Rashid, a nursing student at Lubaga Hospital Training School and resident of Mulunga Village, Nkandwa Sub County in Kyankwanzi District was arrested on Wednesday following an intelligence-led operation carried out by detectives in the policing region.

Ms Kawala Rachael, the Wamala region police spokesperson confirmed the arrest of Bukenya whom he said confessed to investigating officers how he participated in two separate kidnaps reported at Kiboga central police station earlier this month.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to participating in two separate kidnappings, registered under case numbers KBG CRB 642/2024 and KBG CRB 629/2024, which occurred on 5th October 2024 and 12th October 2024, respectively, in Kiboga Town,” Ms Kawala stated.

Preliminary findings indicate that on 5th October 2024, in Saza, Kiboga Town, Kiboga District, an unknown person kidnapped a 4-year-old, the son of Nakalyango Fausta, from their home. The kidnapper later demanded a ransom of one million Ugandan shillings but was given Shs300,000.

“The kidnapper then directed the mother to the location where the victim had been abandoned. The child was recovered alive,” the police spokeswoman added.

Yet on 12th October 2024, another unknown person kidnapped a 3-year-old, the son of Kansiime Jolly, from the parents’ home in Kiboga Town and demanded a ransom of Shs1 million.

“A sum of 400,000 UGX was deposited, but our task team successfully rescued the child. Since then, our task teams have been working tirelessly to ensure that the suspects are brought to justice,” Ms Kawala asserted.

She added that both phone lines used to deposit the 300,000 UGX and 400,000 UGX have been recovered and the suspect is currently in custody at Kiboga Central Police Station (CPS), only awaiting a court appearance.

“We continue to appeal to parents and guardians to remain alert and vigilant and to always monitor their children’s movements,” Kawala urged.
