Kampala, (UG):- The Uganda Women’s National Football Team, commonly known as the Crested Cranes, will play two friendly matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo on October 27th and 30th.
Both games will take place in the capital of Kinshasa and will help the team get in perfect shape ahead of the CECAFA Women’s Championship slated for November in Ethiopia.
In preparation for the matches, Crested Cranes Head Coach Sheryl Botes has named a provisional squad of 38 players. This squad includes five goalkeepers, ten defenders, thirteen midfielders, and nine forwards, showcasing the depth and talent within the women’s football scene in Uganda.
The players are set to enter a residential camp starting Saturday, October 19th, with training commencing the following day. Notably, foreign-based players are expected to join the squad by October 21st, adding experience and international flair to the team.
Botes expressed her optimism about the friendlies, noting the critical need for competitive play. “We last had an engagement in December last year, and I believe we needed competitive games to see the level of our players,” she said.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t compete at the COSAFA Championships due to reasons beyond our control, but thankfully, DR Congo has allowed us to have these two friendly games.”
Botes is confident that the upcoming friendlies will provide valuable insights into the team’s dynamics and individual player performance. “These games will help us assess our strengths and weaknesses and put us in perfect shape ahead of the CECAFA Women’s Championship,” she emphasized.
