Oliver Mbekeka makes history as first ever female coach in Uganda Premier League

Buikwe, (UG):- Former Ugandan footballer Oliver Amani Mbekeka has been appointed as the interim head coach of Lugazi FC, making her the first woman to lead a team in the Uganda Premier League.

The former player and coach of the Crested Cranes was Friday appointed head coach following the departure of Sadick Sempigi who mutually agreed to part ways after a poor start to the season for the newly promoted UPL side.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Sempigi for his tireless efforts and services during the time we have been together and wish him all the very best in his future coaching endeavours,” the club announced on Friday morning.

“Coach Mbekeka Oliver now takes charge of the team,” the statement added.

The former midfielder for the Uganda women’s national team who represented the Crested Cranes at the 2000 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has been assistant coach to Sempigi since July this year, after her maiden appointment to the sport.

She has been and continues to be a vocal advocate for women’s participation in sports.

Mbekeka’s impressive resume includes managing Lady Doves FC in the FUFA Women’s Super League and leading the Uganda U20 Women’s National Team.

However, she steps into the role at a time of uncertainty for Lugazi FC who find themselves at the bottom of the league table, with only two points from five matches. Their season has been tough.

They have suffered defeats against Kitara FC, UPDF FC, and Maroons FC, managing only a solitary draw against Vipers SC.

The pressure to turn things around is palpable as the team prepares to face Express FC at Nakivubo Stadium on Tuesday, October, 22.
