Woman arrested after assaulting traffic officer on duty in viral video

Kampala, (UG):- The Police in Kampala Metropolitan are holding in custody a woman arrested on Friday following a viral video in which she assaulted a traffic officer who stopped her for violating traffic road guidelines.

Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha, driving a Toyota Land Cruiser UBM 439T had allegedly caused an accident along Jinja Road in Kampala when the officer on duty attempted to stop her for questioning.

“Today October 18, 2024, at around 11:55 AM, our traffic police officer from Jinja Road Police Station attempted to stop a white Toyota Land Cruiser (reg. No. UBM 439T) driven by a MERCY TIMBITWIRE BASHISHA who had allegedly caused an accident,” Police said in a statement on Friday evening, attaching the video from the viral incident.

Despite his signals, Police say the motorist refused to stop and continued driving while using her phone. After catching up at Lugogo Traffic Lights, it is alleged that Timbitwire parked at the Uganda Manufacturers Association and locked her vehicle.

The officer asked for her driving permit and it said that she resorted to intimidation of the officer and later assaulted him.

“She went further to confiscate the police EPS gadget and two phones belonging to the police officer,” the police statement read further.

“She is currently under detention as investigations are being conducted,” the Police Spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma asserted.
