Entebbe, Uganda: The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has announced new parking fees at Entebbe International Airport, marking the first adjustment in over 15 years, with the changes set to take effect on November 1, 2024.
According to Vianney Mpuuga Luggya, the UCAA Manager of Public Affairs, the revision is part of ongoing efforts to improve airport infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience. Luggya noted that the current rates, which have been in place since October 2009, no longer reflect the rising costs of maintenance and operations.
“This long-standing fee structure and the increasing costs of upkeep have made the increment necessary. Regular updates to these fees are crucial to ensuring continued service and enhanced convenience for all airport users,” Luggya explained in a statement issued Monday.
Breakdown of New Parking Rates
Under the new structure, Saloon cars and station wagons will pay UGX 5,000 for the first hour, while vans and minibuses will be charged UGX 8,000. Lorries, trailers, trucks, and buses will pay UGX 10,000, and an additional UGX 1,000 will apply for every extra hour across all categories.
For long-term parking, charges will start at UGX 30,000 for the first day, with subsequent days attracting UGX 10,000 per day. To discourage prolonged parking, vehicles left for more than 30 days will incur a daily charge of UGX 200,000.
Additionally, revised monthly parking rates have been introduced, categorized for resident and non-resident users, where Residents (airport staff and regular users): UGX 60,000 – 100,000 for saloon cars; UGX 90,000 – 120,000 for vans/minibuses, and Non-residents: up to UGX 180,000 for vans/minibuses; UGX 240,000 for lorries/trucks.
Justification for New Rates
Luggya defended the adjustments as industry standard practice, saying: “Airport entry and parking payments are standard practices worldwide, serving as key revenue sources for maintaining and improving parking facilities. At Entebbe, these changes will ensure that users enjoy a better and more seamless parking experience and that the airport can continue to provide world-class services.”
He added that the decision aligns with UCAA’s broader infrastructure improvement agenda, aimed at elevating Entebbe International Airport to meet evolving demands and international standards.
