UPDF officers shoot dead three civilians in Agago

Agago, (UG):- Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has condemned the murder of three people and the injuring of others by their own in Agago District.

The gruesome incident happened on 20 October 24 at around midnight in Ngora East village, Ngora Parish, Paimol Sub-county, Agago North county in Agago district.

According to preliminary information, it is alleged that Private RA/249451 Bony Ameny 45, a resident of Ocini Tetulu village, Kamdini Sub-county, in Oyam District who was deployed to Pakor Dungu detach in Parabongo sub-county, Agago district on Monday from Ngora East village, in Paimol Sub-county, about 15 kilometres outside his area of deployment opened fire on the civilians at about 12:30 am, killing 3 people and three people survived.

The deceased were Florence Ajalo 16, Akidi Santina 52, and her 19-year-old daughter Sunday Apio.

The injured are Charles Kidega 45, who was shot in both legs, Janet Apio 20, and her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Blessing Agenorwot Blessing, all currently receiving medical treatment at Dr. Ambrosoli Hospital in Kalongo Town Council.

Capt Edrin Mawanda, the spokesperson of the fifth Infantry Division – UPDF said The UPDF leadership in the region regrets and condemns such an incident of misconduct and remains committed to pursuing the soldier who is still at large for prosecution at the scene of crime and justice.

Mawanda said a preliminary report has it that he had misunderstandings with his wife Angom Betty who escaped from him. It’s further alleged that he went on a shooting rampage as he was looking for the man who could have taken her.

“Ameny is on the run after allegedly shooting dead three civilians and critically injuring three others in Agago District but Joint investigation by UPDF and sister security agencies are underway to get him arrested and prosecuted,” Mawanda said.

Meanwhile, James Nabinson Kidega, the Agago Resident District Commissioner and also chairperson of the district security committee confirmed the incident and equally condemned the action of the suspect whose assignment was meant to protect the lives of the community members.

“In these incidences, we have lost three people in cold blood, one is still in the hospital, we are praying for that one. So I think this is not a good way for us to solve problems. We cannot use them when the gun is getting silent in Agago to kill people. That one doesn’t work well with the government and doesn’t work well with us as the Chairman of Security. Military police are trying to fool him up, look for him and he will be arrested,” Kidega said.

By press time, the deceased bodies had been taken to Dr Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital waiting for postmortem, but a case of murder by shooting has since been registered by the police at Kalongo Police Station under SD03/21/10/2024/CRB160/2024.
