Nakivubo, (UG):- Oliver Amani Mbekeka celebrated her first win as head coach of Lugazi FC, guiding her team to a narrow 1-0 victory over Uganda Premier League giants Express FC at Nakivubo Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Mbekeka, a former Ugandan professional footballer was last week appointed as the interim head coach of Lugazi FC, making her the first woman to lead a team in the Uganda Premier League.
Her appointment came just days prior, taking over the reins from Sadick Sempigi, who parted ways with the club amid concerns over the team’s poor start to their UPL campaign.
Despite the abrupt transition, Mbekeka’s tactical acumen and motivational leadership shone through on the pitch, earning Lugazi FC their first points of the season.
The match itself was a tightly contested affair, with both teams battling for dominance. However, it was Lugazi FC’s determination and strategic play that eventually made the difference.
The only goal of the match came in the second half when a well-placed corner kick found its way to striker Sam Ssemugugu, who expertly converted to secure the lead.
The win was not only a significant milestone for Mbekeka, who has made history as the first female coach in the Uganda Premier League, but also a promising start for Lugazi FC following a challenging beginning to the season.
