How motivational quotes have become a beacon of hope in Uganda

By Odeke Bazel

In Uganda, a nation once thriving on agricultural traditions, the shift to modernity has brought unprecedented challenges. The advent of white-collar jobs has disrupted the country’s backbone, rendering education the benchmark of societal judgment. However, despite the emphasis on education as a key to success, many Ugandans struggle to find employment and have turned to motivational quotes as a beacon of hope.

The phrase “the roots are bitter, but the fruits are sweet” echoes in the minds of many who persevered through education, only to face harsh realities upon graduation. Guest speakers’ words of truthful caution during graduations, “The world out there is tough,” have become a stark reminder of the difficulties that lie ahead.

In search of solace, some Ugandans have turned to religion, seeking blessings and guidance. Others have unfortunately fallen prey to false promises, facing exploitation and harm, within and outside the borders of Uganda. Those born into affluent families have reaped the benefits of their privileged upbringing, while the majority cling to motivational quotes from inspiring figures.

The creative ones have turned themselves into motivational speakers after reading motivational quotes, trying to relate and forge stories, situations, and circumstances to fit the quote. Others even reach the extent of having their tears flow on stage, just to convey the message. Let alone churches, that have turned to be avenues for purely social work other than the histories of Israelites and King David.

Social media platforms are filled with uplifting messages, often masking the pain and desperation of those seeking job opportunities. It’s quite common to view a WhatsApp status with a message of hope or a TikTok video with crying emojis, shooting two birds at the same time; the sender and the viewer. However, some prefer to live in silence and cope with fulfilment, leaving the majority in anguish.

Moreover, many have lost the little they had to con men and women in the name of promising opportunities, falling victim to websites and scams promising lucrative offers. Others have been deceived in network marketing schemes, leading to mental and financial distress, and in some tragic cases, even suicide.

Those who have ventured into business have faced obstacles such as registration procedures, high taxes, unfair pricing, and theft. Despite their determination to succeed, many struggle to make ends meet and face immense challenges to realize their dreams.

While some individuals have found success through showcasing their talents, many talented individuals struggle to gain recognition and support. The existing institutions often prioritize technical know-how over creativity and talent, leaving many without the opportunity to thrive.

While motivational quotes offer temporary relief, they highlight the need for systemic change in Uganda’s education system and economic landscape. Reforms are necessary to address the root causes of unemployment and despair, providing a foundation for a brighter future and sustainable economic growth.
