Govt recognizes contribution of women in peace building – Min Amongi

Kampala, (UG);- The Government says it recognizes that it is difficult to achieve meaningful sustainable peace and development if women are not put at the forefront of peace building and conflict resolution processes.

Gender Minister, Betty Amongi says as government continues to implement the Third National Action Plan (NAP III), 2020-2025 on Women Peace and Security a number of areas have been prioritized which include strengthening partnership building at all levels of implementation, community mobilization and mindset change to value peace as well as mobilization of adequate resources to support the effective implementation of the NAP III.

The Minister was making a statement at the 24th anniversary of United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 at Uganda media center in Kampala.

Other priority areas according to Amongi are integrate WPS activities into the existing government intervention /programmes at national and local levels, mainstreaming the Women Peace and Security Agenda in the implementation of the Third National Development Plan (NDP) in the relevant Programme Implementation Action Plans.

“Building resilience and collective preparedness to respond to emergencies and disasters at the global, regional and national levels; while enhancing skills and capabilities in international negotiations and strengthening early warning systems, addressing the emerging drivers of conflicts such as the ethnic struggles over natural resources, effects of climate change, transnational threats and organized criminal activities, terrorism, cyber-crime and boarder disputes,” she added.

The Minister emphasized that in other peace interventions, Government of Uganda is at the center of peace negotiations among conflict African countries and our uniformed men and women have supported and participated in peace keeping mission across the region.
