DRC 1-2 Uganda
Under the astute leadership of head coach Sheryl Botes, Uganda’s female national team, the Crested Cranes registered two consecutive victories in their friendly matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), held on October 27 and October 30.
The first match played on Sunday, ended with a close score of 2-1 in favor of Uganda. Cranes forward Fazila Ikwaput opened the scoring, netting a goal that set the stage for an exhilarating encounter. Her early strike proved pivotal as Uganda fought to maintain their lead against a determined DRC side.
However, it was Wednesday’s clash that truly highlighted the team’s capabilities. The Cranes came out strong, asserting their dominance early in the game.
Just 15 minutes in, Ikwaput fired Uganda into the lead with a powerful finish. Her relentless pursuit of the goal earned her a second shortly after, following a precise through pass from Phiona Nabulime, bringing the score to 2-0.
The captain, Viola Kivumbi, added to the tally, making it 3-0 before halftime. The Cranes’ cohesive play and strategic formations were evident, as they controlled the game and created numerous scoring opportunities.
The second half saw DRC attempt a comeback, with Flavine Mawete pulling one back in the 62nd minute. However, Uganda’s strong defensive lineup held firm and the match concluded with a 3-1 victory for the Cranes.
Fazila Ikwaput emerged as the standout player of the series, scoring three goals across both matches, including a dazzling brace in the second game.
These victories serve as a significant confidence booster for the Crested Cranes as they prepare for the CECAFA Women’s Championship.
