Kampala, (UG):- Ugandan Assistant Referee Peter Kabugo Friday tragically passed away after collapsing during a Uganda Premier League (UPL) match between SC Villa and UPDF at Wankulukuku Stadium in Kampala.
Kabugo, who was the second assistant referee at Wankulukuku collapsed in the 73rd minute with the match 5-0 in favour of SC Villa. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, casting a shadow over what was otherwise a big match.
The game started with an unexpected turn when UPDF’s Aggrey Kiirya inadvertently put the ball into his own net just one minute into play, handing SC Villa an early lead. The home team capitalized on this momentum, with Charles Lwanga emerging as the standout player.
Lwanga scored twice in quick succession, netting goals in the 11th and 15th minutes, extending Villa’s lead to 3-0 by halftime. The forward continued his impressive performance in the second half, completing a hat trick in the 51st minute and adding another goal in the 71st, making him the first player this season to score four goals in a single match.
This dominant display propelled SC Villa to a 5-0 victory, allowing them to climb to fourth place in the league standings with 11 points, while UPDF remains in ninth with nine points.
The match, however, was overshadowed by the tragic news of Kabugo’s passing.
As the football community mourns the loss of the dedicated official, SC Villa is set to prepare for a crucial Kampala derby against rivals Express on November 8, while UPDF will look to regroup ahead of their match against Mbarara City in Bombo on November 6.
