Edgar Mujuni, one of the three pioneering engineers behind Uganda’s first satellite, Pearl Africa SAT, has been honoured at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Milan as one of the four African professionals recognized as an Emerging Space Leader.
This prestigious award, conferred by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), acknowledges his outstanding contributions to space technologies and their application for sustainable development.
Mujuni, who holds a master’s degree in space systems engineering from Japan and is currently pursuing a PhD in space engineering, was appointed Special Presidential Assistant on Space Engineering by His Excellency President Yoweri Museveni.
This prestigious role reflects his growing influence and technical expertise in the space sector.
Under the mentorship of Eng. Sheba Kyobutungi, Head of Engineering at State House, Mujuni has been instrumental in advancing Uganda’s space ambitions, playing a key role in shaping the country’s strategic initiatives in technological innovation.
“Mujuni is a great resource who is already making a substantial contribution in our grand scheme of building our capacity in space technologies. We congratulate him for this achievement and encourage him to utilize his knowledge for the development of our nation”, Eng. Sheba Kyobutungi said.
Mujuni’s work, particularly in the design and development of Uganda’s first satellite, represents a significant milestone in Africa’s engagement with the global space sector.
His contributions align with broader goals of harnessing space technology for sustainability, improving infrastructure, and addressing pressing issues such as climate change.
Reflecting on his recognition, Mujuni stated, “This recognition at an international level marks a significant achievement, not just for me but for Uganda and Africa. It highlights the continent’s growing role in the global space industry and the potential of space technology to drive sustainable development.”
Mujuni’s achievements are a catalyst for space exploration and innovation in Africa, inspiring young engineers and scientists to harness space technology to solve global challenges.
With strong backing from Uganda’s leadership and international collaborations, he is poised to help position Africa as a key player in the global space sector.
