Elgon Marathon unites tourism and conservation efforts in Uganda

Elgon Region, (UG):- The Elgon Half Marathon Saturday brought together Uganda Tourism Board staff, led by CEO Lilly Ajarova, alongside stakeholders and partners, including world-renowned athlete Joshua Cheptegei.

The event, held in the stunning backdrop of Mt. Elgon National Park, aimed to promote not only tourism but also the vital message of conservation and healthy living.

The marathon was officially launched by Hon. Tom Butime, Uganda’s Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, with notable appearances from Ms. Nwanne Vwede-Obahor, the UNDP Resident Representative for Uganda, and Halima Nakaayi, a world champion athlete.

Their presence underscored the event’s significance in advocating for environmental stewardship and community involvement.

Participants from diverse backgrounds joined the race, demonstrating their commitment to amplifying climate action in this biodiverse region.

The marathon served as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of preserving Mt. Elgon’s natural beauty while fostering inclusive participation in tourism initiatives.

In addition to its focus on conservation, the event also addressed social issues, advocating for the elimination of gender-based violence (GBV). Organizers emphasized that promoting a safe and inclusive environment is essential for sustainable tourism and community development.
