Toyota Noah driver arrested for overloading in viral video

Kabale, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Kabale District have detained a driver and his conductor over reckless driving and overloading following a viral video on social media, police said.

The video, which went viral this week showed the suspect’s vehicle, a Toyota Noah with registration number UBB 302E, dangerously loaded and moving along the Kabale-Katuna Road in Kabale, southwestern Uganda.

“A driver & conductor of vehicle UBB 302E have been arrested & detained at Kabale Police after a video surfaced of them carrying dangerously with the conductor even seated top of the vehicle on Katuna road,” traffic police spokesperson, SP Michale Kananura said in a statement on Saturday afternoon.

In the footage, the conductor is seen seated in a precarious position beside loaded cargo atop the vehicle, a setup that authorities found extremely unsafe.

The Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Mr Elly Maate identified the driver as Brian Akanyijuka and the conductor as Kennedy Kyokwijuka.

He said the duo faces charges of dangerous loading, transporting passengers in a way that endangers lives, and operating without a license.

Upon completion of investigations, the two will be brought to court to face the charges, with authorities intending to discourage similar reckless acts by others in the future.

“We commend the vigilant citizen who recorded & shared the incident & encourage others to do the same,” Kananura said.
