Kampala, (UG):- The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Anitah Among Wednesday joined millions of leaders celebrating the election of new United States President Donald Trump and said the return of the former US President means sanctions against her are now a gone case.
“I want to assure members that no amount of intimidation can ever move me from where I am. I will remain the smiling me. And now that Donald Trump has won, the sanctions are gone,” Hon Among stated while chairing the house on Wednesday afternoon.
Her statements attracted laud applause and reaction from the plenary members, signalling confidence that his administration may foster stronger diplomatic ties and avoid sanctions on Uganda.
Having faced scrutiny both domestically and internationally over issues such as human rights and governance, the speaker’s message conveys a defiant stance, reaffirming her resistance to outside pressures.
According to Hon Among, Trump’s return to the U.S. presidency is a big shift that she believes could ease international pressures on Uganda.
Trump, 78, was elected the 45th US President, capping a remarkable comeback four years after he was voted out of the White House and ushering in a new American leadership likely to test democratic institutions at home and relations abroad.
The Republican party leader recaptured the White House on Wednesday by securing more than the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency, following a campaign of dark rhetoric that deepened the polarization in the country.
