Apac, (UG):- Business activity in Apac Municipality has significantly increased, especially at night, following the installation of streetlights, DailyExpress understands.

The lights, installed as part of the World Bank-funded Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development Additional Funding (USMID-AF) Project were installed on the upgraded Chawente (0.8 kilometres) and Chegere (0.65 kilometres) roads.

The project’s total sum was Shs16 billion and was implemented by Abubaker Technical Services and Al-Anuimi Group in a joint venture.

These improvements have transformed the municipality into a more vibrant and secure area, encouraging businesses to extend their operating hours and creating a safer environment for residents and visitors alike. The enhanced lighting has not only improved security but also contributed to the local economy by attracting more customers to businesses operating at night.

Alex Odongo Aruba, a bar owner, mentioned that before the streetlights were installed, he used to close his business at 8:00 PM for fear of being attacked by thugs.

“I used to close my business at 8.00 pm for fear of being attacked by thugs but the street lights have not only extended business hours but also enhanced security. For now, it is better than before,“ Odongo sad

Loy Tino, a mobile money vendor, “I used to close my mobile money business by latest 7.30 pm, but now I am operating up to 10 pm because of the light. Around that time people are many in town as a result of light,“.

On the other hand, Joan Apio, the Deputy Resident Commissioner of Apac District, highlighted the positive impact of installing street lights in the municipality. She says Installing street lights has indeed played a crucial role in enhancing security and reducing crime rates in the municipality.

“By lighting dark areas, the street lights have deterred criminal activities and provided a sense of security for residents, allowing businesses to operate for longer hours and promoting a safer environment for all,” she said.

“Such positive steps taken by the government to improve the safety and well-being of the community are commendable,” added Apio.
