Fort Portal, (UG):- The Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Mr Kiyingi Stephen Amooti and Fort Portal Resident City Commissioner Mr Stanley Bayole have embarked on a major initiative aimed at empowering women through the GROW (Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises), project.
The project, funded by the World Bank, and implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development and the Private Sector Foundation Uganda, focuses on promoting sustainable agricultural practices and enhancing women’s economic opportunities in the Tooro region.
The development was revealed during a workshop held at Nyaika Hotel, Fort Portal Tourism City, to train cultural and religious leaders on the GROW project. The event, which included the presence of all the RCC deputies, was aimed at equipping Tooro leaders with the knowledge to encourage and support women entrepreneurs in the region.
Mr Bayole said he has already begun mobilizing women across Fort Portal and neighbouring communities, ensuring they participate in the initiative to improve their financial independence.
In his address, the RCC emphasized the importance of empowering women in agriculture to boost household incomes and build a resilient agricultural community. ” Through this project, we aim to transform the lives of women in Tooro and build a strong economic foundation for the region,” Bayole stated.
Prime Minister Owek. Kiyingi Stephen Amooti highlighted the alignment of the project with Tooro Kingdom’s sustainable development goals, stressing the critical role of partnerships with organizations like the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).
These partnerships, he said, will integrate advanced technologies and agrotourism opportunities into the project, creating additional revenue streams for the community.
About GROW Project
GROW project is a Government of Uganda initiative that arose out of the need to respond to the needs of women entrepreneurs who want to grow their businesses, sustain their self-employment and create more jobs. The Project Development Objective (PDO) is to increase access to entrepreneurial services that enable female entrepreneurs to grow their enterprises in targeted locations, including in refugee-hosting districts (RHDs).
The GROW project, which focuses on crop and livestock farming, provides women with vital resources, training, and support, focusing on climate-resilient and high-yield techniques.
