Oyam NRM boss accused of extorting aspirants ahead of party elections

Oyam, (UG):- The National Resistance Movement [NRM] Publicity Secretary for Oyam District, Mr Phillips Ogile Jakayo has asked the party leadership to intervene in the allegations of extorting potential aspirants by the district party chairman, Mr Jasper Onena ahead of the looming party primaries.

Mr Ogile made this remark on the sidelines of an NRM extended DEC meeting yesterday, Tuesday, November 12, organized to harmonize party members.

“It is true I am not happy because of the meeting, how they invited people, the content of the meeting, and why the meeting was invited. I had no clue. NRM structure, we have what we call a district executive committee. We share our issue at the deck before bringing an expanded deck. And ex-officials,” Ogile expressed during the meeting.

He further criticized the chairman saying, “There is a problem with the office of NRM. Chairman, who is acting chairman, Mr. Jasper Onena, I don’t know how he lacks leadership skills. Procedurally, the Publicity Secretary is the one to invite people. Today’s meeting seems to be calling for aspirants to come and get money from them.”

Ogile also accused Onena of misusing funds allocated for organizing meetings. “He [Onena], is being facilitated every quarter to organize meetings, which is not a meeting to extort money from aspirants. But where is this money? Who does he account this money to? NRM Secretariat is sending this money every quarter. We don’t see this money,” he said.

In response, Onena distanced himself from the allegations, stating that it is Ogile who is constantly begging political aspirants.

“We are not making any money. Instead, people like himself [Ogile] are the ones who run after money every now and then. That’s why you get him in the cultural foundation, you get him for church and again for politics, you find he is there, he wants to be in structure, he also wants to be chairperson LC3. He is one of the double dealers in NRM,” Onena said.

Onena explained that the expanded deck meeting of NRM was aimed at coming together and harmonising with all the structures and systems of the district since elections are nearing.

“First of all, we have NRM structure, primary election, and then the general election of 2026. So we felt that it was high time to come together and mobilize our people to work as a team, as one family of NRM. Since many candidates or many people are aspiring, therefore, there is a need for us to come together, to agree here and there, to have cohesion since we are moving towards a very contentious moment,” Onena remarked.
