Uganda Cranes qualify for AFCON 2025 with two matches to go

Uganda Cranes Thursday secured their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after the match result between South Sudan and Congo Brazzaville returned in Uganda’s favour to confirm their participation at the 35th edition of the continental tourney.

The Cranes’ spot was confirmed on Thursday evening after neighbours South Sudan stunned Congo 3-2 in a thrilling comeback win in Juba to secure their first and only points in Group K.

With the Red Devils of Congo stuck on 4 points and unable to overtake Uganda (10 points) or South Africa (8 points), the Uganda-South Africa clash at Namboole now becomes a battle for pride and positioning deciding who finishes at the summit of Group K.

The news comes exciting to footballer lovers and supporters of Uganda Cranes will be playing at their 8th AFCON edition after playing there in 1962, 1968, 1974, 1976, 1978, 2017 & 2019 with the best performance coming in 1978 when they finished runners-up in Kumasi, Ghana.

Earlier in the day, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Anita Annet Among paid a visit to the Uganda Cranes’ camp at Namboole, offering both encouragement and financial backing ahead of the South Africa match.

Hon Among attended the Cranes’ final training session, observing the team’s preparations and offering words of inspiration. “The team looks sharp, and I have no doubt that they will make us proud tomorrow,” Speaker Among said.

“On behalf of President Yoweri Museveni and the First Lady, Janet Museveni, I want to convey our best wishes and our full support. You are all champions!” She added.

The Speaker promised a reward of Shs 50 million for the squad, with an additional winning bonus should they defeat South Africa on Friday. “We are behind you 100%. Let’s all keep the team in our prayers and support them in every way we can,” she added.

The Speaker was accompanied on the visit by husband and FUFA President Hon. Moses Magogo, Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament Hon. Basalirwa Asuman, and former Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Uganda now joins other nations that have qualified for the 2025 AFCON including hosts Morocco, defending champions Algeria, Senegal, DR Congo, Egypt, and many other continental powerhouses.
