Oyam, (UG):- The seat for Oyam District National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairperson has so far attracted five aspirants as the race for the party’s district leadership position heats up ahead of the forthcoming grassroots elections.
Among the five is Mr George Ewai, who retired as Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Robert Opio Mutenge, a businessman, Martin Abila, the former NRM Chairperson (2011-2015), Bosco Onyik Ogwal, a former official at the National Council of Sports and Jasper Onena, the sitting chairperson.
Jasper Onena, the incumbent, expressed his intention to retain his position to ensure NRM’s continued success in Oyam.
“I had initially decided not to contest in the coming election but people are requesting me to continue leading them to ensure that NRM attains success in Oyam District and that’s why I am now coming up. I am not ready to let them down and they are still trusting me,” Onena said.
George Ewai confirmed his candidacy to DailyExpress in a telephone interview, stating, “Yes, I am contesting. I have not changed my mind. I am a mobilizer and I will keep listening to them one by one until the end.”
Bosco Onyik speaking to this publication revealed that people have requested him to lead the NRM party and that he can’t disappoint them.
“The people have spoken and I will not have any doubt in my mind to think the way they are thinking. That is why I have come to help lead the party in the district because I have the techniques we need as a party,” Onyik explained.
Martin Abila, who is also vying for the position, highlighted his unique mobilizing skills. “I don’t have any fear because I am unique in a way that I am known in all those villages in all the 16 sub-counties,” Abila said.
“Besides that, I know how to formalize the structure that come and vote at the district level so the rest who come are not aware of that,” he added.
The NRM grassroots election is expected to kick off early next month (December) and conclude at the National Conference with the election of the National Executive Committee leadership.
