The full roster of 24 nations set to compete in the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been confirmed, with Mozambique securing the final spot in dramatic fashion.
The Southern African nation clinched their place with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, capping off an intense qualification campaign that saw some teams excel, while others had to dig deep to secure their place in the tournament.
In Group K’s final fixture, Uganda Cranes secured a 1-0 victory over Congo, bouncing back from a disappointing 2-0 loss to the Bafana Bafana just days earlier.
Cranes forward Jamal Travis Mutyaba, who plays for Girondins de Bordeaux in France, scored the only goal of the match in the 55th minute to give Uganda a deserved win in a match that had little bearing on the qualification standings.
The result ensured Uganda finished with 13 points in Group K, marking their highest-ever tally in a qualification campaign. However, they had to settle for second place in the group, with South Africa topping the table on 14 points after a dominant 3-0 victory over South Sudan in Johannesburg.
The 2025 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco, which qualifies automatically as the host nation. Morocco’s footballing pedigree is well established, and the nation is expected to be a strong contender, especially with their home advantage.
The Moroccan national team has been in strong form in recent years, having made history by reaching the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and their participation in AFCON 2025 will be eagerly anticipated by fans across the continent.
The upcoming tournament promises to be a highly competitive event, with some of Africa’s most successful nations ensuring their place. Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia all booked their spots early in the qualification campaign, confirming their status as perennial powerhouses in African football.
Nigeria, another team with a rich AFCON history, also secured their qualification, ensuring their presence in Morocco alongside South Africa, who finished at the top of Group K.
These iconic teams will be among the favourites to lift the trophy, but the tournament will also feature a number of nations looking to make their mark on the continental stage.
DR Congo, Angola, and Gabon are back in the fold, while Sudan and Benin earned their places on the final day of qualifying.
The qualification process has also seen the return of several nations that had missed recent editions of the tournament. Botswana, this will be a return after a 12-year absence, a testament to the growing competitiveness of African football.
Emerging teams such as Zambia, Mali, Zimbabwe, and Comoros will also feature in Morocco, completing a balanced line-up that combines the established powerhouses with nations on the rise. Tanzania, another nation with a passionate football fanbase, will be at the tournament, adding to the diversity of the competition.
