Museveni congratulates Uganda Cranes upon qualifying for AFCON 2025

Kampala, (UG):- Uganda’s President, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Wednesday congratulated the national men’s team; Uganda Cranes upon securing a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, set to take place in Morocco next year.

“I congratulate the Uganda Cranes on qualifying for AFCON,” President Museveni said in a statement. “Uganda has qualified for the third time in the last eight years of the biannual competition,” the 80-year-old leader added.

Museveni’s words were both a recognition of the team’s achievement and an encouragement to continue striving for excellence in the sport.

The President extended his congratulations to the players, coaches, and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), as well as the Ministry of Education and Sports, and all Ugandans who supported the team throughout the qualification campaign.

“I congratulate the players, coaches, FUFA, the Ministry of Education and Sports, and all fellow Ugandans,” Museveni stated.

In his message, the President also emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to improving the country’s sports infrastructure. “The government has already committed a lot of resources to construct and rehabilitate the sports infrastructure, and we will continue to do so,” he affirmed.

Uganda Cranes secured their place in the 2025 AFCON after a 0-1 victory over Congo in their final Group K qualifier on Tuesday evening.

The match, played in Brazzaville, was a morale-boosting win after a disappointing loss to South Africa four days earlier.

Cranes Forward Jamal Travis Mutyaba, who plays for Girondins de Bordeaux in France, scored the only goal of the match in the 55th minute, sending Uganda’s crowd in Brazzaville into celebration.

Although the match had little bearing on Uganda’s qualification, as the Cranes had already secured their spot in the tournament, the win helped the team close out the campaign on a positive note.

With 13 points, Uganda finished second in Group K, just one point behind leaders South Africa, who defeated South Sudan 3-0 to top the group with 14 points on Tuesday.

This marks a significant achievement for the Uganda Cranes, who will now compete among the continent’s best in Morocco, looking to improve on their performance in previous AFCON tournaments.
