Police speak out on Ntinda mobile money shop shooting, two confirmed dead

Kampala, (UG):- The Police in Kampala Metropolitan have confirmed the fatal shooting of two civilians in a suspected aggravated robbery that rocked Ntinda-Kigoowa, a Kampala suburb on Thursday evening.

The KMP Deputy Publicist, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire in a statement confirmed the incident in which one Tugume Albert Cook, a brother to Deputy Kampala Lord Mayor, Ms Doreen Nyanjura and a Boda Boda cyclist were shot and killed in the grievous shooting.

“The Kampala Metropolitan Police East Region is actively investigating a tragic robbery incident that occurred on the evening of 21st November 2024 at around 7:00 PM in Kiwatule Central Zone, Nakawa Division, Kampala City,” ASP Owoyesigyire said in a statement via the police’s official X handle on Friday morning.

According to Mr Owoyesigyire, “It is alleged that Mr. Tugume Albert, 34, a mobile money operator, was preparing to close his shop when he was attacked by an assailant intent on robbing him of his cash. During the scuffle, a boda boda rider, Mr. Sabiti Barnabas, 30, attempted to intervene but was shot by another armed assailant waiting nearby.”

Tugume who was the main target attempted to flee but was pursued and fatally shot by the suspects, who made away with a bag believed to have contained an unspecified amount of cash.

“Police investigators promptly arrived at the scene and recovered critical evidence that will aid in the ongoing investigation. Additionally, a vehicle, registration number UBH 045H, was found damaged by stray bullets.”

Despite Barnabas beinf rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital to  receive  treatment for bullet injuries, Owoyesigyire revealed that he also passed on in the wee hours of Friday.

“The body of Mr. Tugume was transported to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem examination. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Tugume Albert during this difficult time,” the KMP deputy spokesperson noted.

“The Kampala Metropolitan Police remains committed to bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. We urge members of the public with any information that could assist in the investigation to come forward.”
