Wakiso, (UG):- The Police in Nansana Division are holding in custody six members of a notorious panga-wielding gang following their arrest in a Wednesday morning police swoop targeting a notorious gang responsible for a series of violent robberies in Wakiso, Kampala and its surrounding areas.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango said Wednesday that the group was nabbed after a successful intelligence-led operation which raided a hideout in Kyebando village early on the morning of Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
The operation, according to Mr Onyango, took place at around 4:00 a.m. and resulted in the arrest of six individuals linked to the gang.
“The operation was prompted by information from a reliable source, leading to the arrest of Kakeeto Imran, who revealed the identities of other gang members during interrogation that led to the arrest of the five,” Mr Onyango revealed in a police statement.
He identified the suspects currently in custody at Nansana Police Station as; Manaishimwe Emable, 23, Nyweza Aaron, 20, Muyingo Mike, 24, Agaba Godfrey, 18, all boda boda riders and Kakeeto Imran, 17, chapati maker, Mutebi John, 17.
All the suspects, Onyango said, are residents of Kyebando Kabulengwa and are believed to have been actively involved in the gang’s criminal activities.
“The suspects confessed to targeting individuals with valuables, utilizing different motorcycles, and employing pangas, hammers, and other breaking tools in their operations,” the KMP publicist further noted, adding that the police managed to recover two motorcycles; UGG 375G and UFC 613N, as well as six mobile phones from the suspects during the operation.
According to preliminary police findings, the gang’s most recent attack took place in Bukuya, Kasanda District, where they reportedly attacked and robbed unsuspecting individuals with pangas.
Onyango said police authorities are now focused on tracking down additional members of the group, including the prime suspect, Sserugo, who remains at large.
Thorough investigations are also underway to apprehend and prosecute other associates, including the prime suspect, Sserugo, who remains at large.
“The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as the police intensify their efforts to restore safety to the affected areas.”
