Kampala, (UG):- Victoria University Kampala Thursday officially unveiled the university rugby football team; Victoria Sharks ahead of kickoff in the Uganda Rugby Premier League campaign.
“Today, Victoria University proudly unveiled the Victoria Sharks, our dynamic rugby team, along with their striking new kit. The ‘Victoria Sharks’ embody our values of boldness, leadership, and excellence. Join us as we make waves in the rugby world,” the University posted via its official X handle.
The Sharks, formed just two years ago secured a coveted spot in the Rugby Premier League, Uganda’s top-tier rugby competition. But with the able leadership of its patron, Prof. Lawrence Muganga they were able to secure qualification as confirmed by Mr. Isaac Lutwama, the CEO of Uganda Rugby Union, praising the Sharks’ rapid ascent to the top-flight.
“In just two years, this team has shown incredible dedication to excellence. Their rise from the Varsity Sevens to the Premier League is a testament to their commitment. We look forward to seeing them compete at the highest level,” Lutwama said on Thursday at the team’s launch.
“This is a big step taken by the team to play in the Nile Special Premier League. It is a big milestone indeed the fact that it first played in the Central regional league where they also won, therefore It is not about playing Rugby but the players are also receiving welfare in form of insurance and scholarships from the University,” he added.
On his part, the Sharks Patron, Vice Chancellor Muganga expressed immense pride in the team’s achievements, particularly their undefeated streak in the University Sevens. “This has been an incredible journey, and this team has truly lived up to the high expectations we’ve worked so hard to achieve,” he said.
He [Muganga] clarified that the initiative (to establish the rugby team) is part of the University’s Social Corporate Responsibility to instil a spirit of collaboration, resilience, and discipline in students to help them thrive in the real world.
Muganga further urged the team to embrace technology and innovation because the university has made education technology-driven, leaving behind traditional methods like books and pens. This forward-thinking approach, according to him, can help prepare students for the real world.
Mr. Ssebuliba Patrick, the Chairman of Victoria Sharks Rugby Club explained that all the players have been given scholarships but urged for more support to help players access university education.
To his request, Victoria University offered to provide rugby scholarships to 13 promising players into the Rugby League season, laying the foundation for the team’s success.
