Kampala, (UG):- The Vice President Maj (Rtd), Jessica Alupo Epel has applauded the manufacturing sector for expanding and improving the dysfunctional economy when the National Resistance Movement took over power.
Alupo’s message was delivered by the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Home Betty Amongi at the prestigious Peoples Choice awards 2024 held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala on 22rd November. The VP said the manufacturing sector was small while the services sector was struggling.
“Through an ideologically correct diagnosis of the challenges afflicting the economy and prescribing the right solutions, such as building robust infrastructure and reducing the cost of doing business through investment in energy as well as carrying out economic reforms that empowered the private sector to unleash its potential, Uganda which was once the supermarket of the world, importing literally everything from Asia, Europe, North America, a bit of South Africa and other African countries, is now a shining star when it comes to manufacturing,” she noted.
She continued; “We have now built capacity to manufacture products for our consumption and export and the future can only get brighter.”
Alupo noted that Industrial Parks such as the ones at Kapeka, Mbale, the Namanve-Seta-Mbalala stretch in Mukono and several others coming up across the country, which are doing a commendable job in terms of import substitution, creating jobs for our children and contributing to the tax base.
“However, for our manufacturing sector to grow bigger and better, and for the Made in Uganda brand to expand its horizons, we must, both as the private sector and Government, as well as development partners, be deliberate about improving quality of the products and services,” she advised.
