Amuru, (UG):- The Amuru District Security Committee has finally arrested the suspect in the tragic murder case of a six-year-old child from Otici Village in a suspected act of child sacrifice.
The suspect, Okwera Bernard, 23, was by police on 23rd November in Elegu II Village, Pabbo Sub- County while attempting to perform ritual prayers on Labala Hill following an intelligent tip-off by the locals.
The suspect allegedly on 19th November 2024, at about 3:00 pm, cut the neck of a six-year-old pupil of Otici Primary School to death from Owadi Village, Guruguru Sub-County and fled the scene.
Mr Osborn Geoffrey Oceng, the Amuru Resident District Commissioner of Amuru confirmed the development in a Sunday statement. “He was found in possession of a bed sheet with dry blood stains and a panga and on interrogation,” Oceng noted.
“He is of the above particulars and address. The same parish where a child was murdered by cutting around the neck. However, the suspect declined to admit whether he was the one who committed the murder,”
Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the victim was playing with other children when an assailant abducted him, dragged him into a nearby bush, and fatally assaulted him with a sharp object.
Following his arrest, Okwera was detained at Pabbo Police Station for initial interrogation before being transferred to Amuru Central Police Station where he is currently undergoing thorough interrogation by investigating authorities.
RDC Oceng urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculating on the investigation’s outcome. “We are committed to ensuring that the perpetrator of this heinous crime is brought to justice. We ask the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, movement (behaviours) to the security authorities.”
The murder of the six-year-old was widespread in the communities to be one of rumoured 400 heads allegedly demanded for a ritual at Karuma Bridge, a statement both the 4th Division Commander Gen. Felix Busizoori and West Aswa regional police commanders in the region have labelled to be propaganda and have since vowed to crack whip on the people engineering.
