Wakiso, (UG):- Two pupils of Golden Hearts Junior School died on the spot and five others were rushed to hospital with critical injuries after a tragic motor accident registered Sunday morning at Kabulengwa village, in Nansana, Wakiso District.

The 9:30 am accident occurred when a truck loaded with plastic chairs lost control while climbing a steep Murram road, veered backwards and struck a group of pupils from Golden Hearts Junior School coming from the opposite direction.

“The incident involved a vehicle, Isuzu Elf UBA 104G, loaded with plastic chairs, which lost control while climbing a hilly Murram road. The vehicle moved backwards, ramming into pupils of Golden Hearts Junior School who were moving in the opposite direction,” Traffic Police Spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura confirmed the incident in a Sunday statement.

“Tragically, 2 pupils were confirmed dead at the scene, while 5 others were injured. The victims were rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Wakiso for medical attention. The deceased were taken to Mulago City Mortuary,” he added.

Further information obtained indicated that the school had hired the truck to transport the plastic chairs for a school event, and the pupils following the truck ended up being casualties of the accident.

“The driver is on the run, but the school where those pupils go to is the same school that had hired that vehicle to carry chairs,” Kananura said, attributing the cause of the accident to a suspected mechanical breakdown.

Police urged motorists to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, including checks on brakes, tyres, and other crucial systems, to prevent mechanical failures that can lead to devastating accidents.

“It’s vital to regularly check your vehicle’s brakes, tyres & other essential systems to prevent mechanical failures,” he said, adding that “the vehicle involved has been towed to Lubigi Police Station for further investigation.”
