Kamuli counterfeit ringleader committed to High Court for trial

Kamuli, (UG):- The Chief Magistrates Court in Kamuli District has charged and committed to the high court a 32-year-old man over aggravated robbery and possession of counterfeit notes. 

The ruling was Tuesday made by trial magistrate Aisha Nabukeera who advanced the case to a higher jurisdiction as it is aggravated and capital in nature.

Sowedi Egumbye, a resident of Bugaga B, Nawantumbi ward, Nawanyago Town council in Kamuli district is accused of robbing Shilikya Paul of Ug Shs 5m and property worthy Ug shs 9m following his arrest in an intelligence-led operation carried out Tuesday, November 26 at his residence.

State Prosecution told court that during the month of March this year, Sowedi and others at large robbed Paul after issuing him counterfeit dollars. “The victim was lured by the suspects from Kireka. They assured him of US dollars that he would obtain after giving them some amount of Ugandan currency. He travelled to meet them at Nawanyago where he was robbed of cash and a bag which contained phones,” the charge sheet presented by the District State Attorney read in part.

Court further heard that it had become a common practice for the group to lure and fleece victims, especially from Kampala and other areas. Where they fail to succeed, they use tools and sticks to obtain the target.

Afande Kasadha Michael the Busoga north police spokesperson said that they are still investigating while a serious manhunt is on for the suspects at large to have them apprehended. 

“Further investigations are ongoing to have the file forwarded to the DPP for further legal procedure”; he said.
