Kamuli’s counterfeit notes ring leader arrested over robbery, malicious damage

Kamuli, (UG);- The territorial Police in Kamuli District, Busoga region Tuesday arrested the counterfeit money ring-leader in the area on allegations of gross robbery and malicious property damage. 

The suspect identified as Sowedi Egumbye was arrested in an intelligence-led operation conducted on November 26, at around 04:00 am from his residence at Bugaga B, Nawantumbi ward, Nawanyago Town Council in Kamuli district.

Sowedi’s arrest followed complaints of robberies, inciting violence and Malicious damage that were registered last year and this year.

According to preliminary police investigations, it is alleged that Sowedi and others robbed a number of people after exchanging counterfeit dollars.

“They first lure the victims into believing that they have genuine dollars. They target businessmen and civil servants, especially from Kampala and other places,” a statement issued by Busoga North Spokesperson, Mr Kasadha Michael read on Tuesday.

“On the 19th of August 2024, the same group attacked and Maliciously damaged Nawanyago police cells in an attempt to rescue a colleague who was in custody over counterfeit money distribution,” he added.

Mr Kasadha explained that upon completion of inquiries, the suspect will be produced in court to answer appropriate charges. “We remain committed to combating counterfeit operations in the region”, he said.
