Tororo, (UG):- The Territorial Police in Tororo Thursday successfully intervened to rescue a woman, Nyapendi Rose Mary, who had become a victim of severe abuse at the hands of her husband, Buyala Gerald. The suspect, now in police custody, is believed to be in his thirties.
The incident unfolded in Angolom Village, located within the Nyangole Sub-County of Tororo District. It is alleged that Buyala Gerald subjected his wife to brutal torture, ultimately leading her to collapse by the roadside while seeking assistance.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that Gerald stood by, observing the aftermath of his violent actions rather than offering aid.
A police officer stationed at the Nyangole Police Post responded promptly upon receiving information about the distressing situation. Upon arrival, the officer noticed a man at a distance, who appeared to be indifferent to the plight of the struggling woman.
When questioned about his inaction, the individual fled, prompting the officer to pursue him. It was then that the officer realized this man was, in fact, the suspect. He called for backup from the quick reactionary force at CPS Tororo, who swiftly arrived on the scene.
The police team managed to transport Nyapendi to Tororo Main Hospital for urgent medical care. Meanwhile, Buyala allegedly fled towards Nyangole Trading Centre, where he reportedly boarded a motorcycle taxi (Boda Boda) in a bid to escape the law.
The officer expressed disappointment at the bystanders who failed to assist in detaining the suspect, instead allowing him to leave despite the near-fatal assault he had just committed.
Upon returning to the Nyangole Police Post, the officer discovered that the Internal Security Officer (ISO) at the sub-county had apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police for further processing. The police commend the ISO and their personnel for their collaborative efforts in addressing this egregious act of violence.
“Currently, Buyala is in custody at CPS Tororo, pending thorough interrogation. Authorities are optimistic that sufficient evidence will be gathered to facilitate his prosecution in court,” stated IP Mugwe Johnson Moses, the Acting Public Relations Officer for Bukedi South Region.
As investigations continue, police officials have issued a stern warning against acts of domestic violence and human rights abuses. They emphasize the necessity for community members to report such offences, assuring that those who resist adherence to the law will face legal consequences.
“We condemn all acts of human rights abuse and torture associated with domestic violence. It is imperative that individuals refrain from such behaviours, and those who do not comply will be reported, arrested, and prosecuted in a court of law,” he said.
