Pallisa, (UG):- Parents from the rural settings in Teso and Bukedi sub-regions have been called to desist from marrying off their girls at a tender age before they benefit from education and formally get unique and quality engagement.
Emmanuel Olebo a medical practitioner who contested under FDC twice in Kibale County, Pallisa District made the remarks last Saturday at Omatakojo village in Kibale sub-county during a mega introduction ceremony in which Mr Nyevu Lawrence a Mpigi-based auditor formalized his marital commitment to Lucy Alupo a daughter to Patrick Outa a former banker.
Olebo, a renowned events manager popularly known as Regional Talented MC in Bukedi North and Teso South encouraged parents to educate their daughters because it’s a form of value addition.
He said in Pallisa when an in-law pays a dowry of two cows, three goats and 300,000 he is highly respected and celebrated as a recognized caring in-law but when a girl is highly educated gifts alone exceed 10 million and even cows are improved Friesians like Alupo has brought
“Never waste time calling or inviting me to manage traditional, wedding or civic marriage of dropouts and those defiled cases that you initiate you negotiations illegally then after failing to agree end up in police because I will devaluate myself and career because of 300,000”, Olebo said.
He added that he was happy for his brother Outa for valuing the education of his children and he is now yielding from the value he added to them. He said doctors, engineers, auditors, lawyers or any other professional will bother to pick a dropout girl as a wife but preferably making her a maid for his classic wife”, Olebo.
Outa the father of the bridegroom said as a beneficiary of education himself he wanted his children to follow suit regardless of the sex.
“I have an interest in leading Pallisa as a district with a view to creating awareness of the importance of education. We register the highest number of dropouts in this region because their a loophole in leadership not only monitoring but mentoring and having a reference of successful stories in your household as a leader” Outa said.
He said the function according to the initial program was supposed to be held in big hotels like Wash and Wills in Mbale or Laquinta, Heritage, and Anna Resort in Pallisa but refused as he wanted rural children to realize the importance of education and parents to emulate him.
Mr Aloet Eria, a Hydrogeologist at the Ministry of Water and Environment who is the brother to Alupo lauded all parents who value education through his father and tasked his father to keep sensitizing people even when he is outside the leadership arena.
“I had my primary at Kalaki Primary School and Mr Okwakol Lawrence my mathematics and science and Mr Otimong Johnson of social studies devoted their time for us. Mr Okwakol prophesied that Aloet I see a great future scientist in you and 12 years later I graduated with my BSc. in Hydrogeology from Makerere University. I remember by then these two teachers called UPE were not on payroll we could go with them for mangoes together during lunch time “, Aloet, currently working as a Regional senior water officer based in Lira, recollected.
Alupo the bride thanked whoever made her succeed in life. “My first package of gratitude goes to my parents and all those who ventured into my growth and education until today I landed on the chest of my lovely husband Mr. Nywevu Lawrence. This was possible because my parents could sit me down and give me pieces of a device that I got stuck to and I also assured that I would never mess up until I get done with my education and pick on a man that God will destine to me as a husband “, Alupo said.
Alupo encouraged girls never to waste their future with mere soda, and jellies men buy for them in exchange for sex but to get focused on their future.
However, Pius Olupot the LC1 Chairperson of Omatakojo said this was the most marvelous function he has ever graced where more than two languages are used. “…I request us to learn a lot from this family of Mr. Outa and invest in education not taking children to school because it’s a government policy and yet you don’t have a devoted heart for the child.”
Olupot recommended Alupo to marry Nywevu and promote Iteso values while in Kabaka’s land. “Our girls who refused to study get married within and are ever a burden to us trying to settle their domestic cases and the majority have failed in marriage who are noi deferred as comebacks “, he said.
Nonetheless, Nywevu could not keep silent as the bride but appreciate his parents-in-law for educating and grooming his wife Lucy who is like a rose to him among lilies. “I am now an added son to this home and am happy for Lucy to usher me here”, Nyevu stated with joyous feelings.
