Kiryandongo, (UG):- Joseline Atuhura, a respected youth leader and humanitarian from Kiryandongo District, has announced her candidacy for the position of Woman Member of Parliament (MP) in the 2026 general elections.
The development comes after the incumbent Woman MP, Hon. Kahunde Helen declared that she will not seek re-election after three successful terms in office.
Atuhura, known for her commitment to community service and youth empowerment, now seeks to build on the work of her predecessor while addressing the key challenges facing Kiryandongo District. However, her candidacy has not been without its critics, who argue that Atuhura is too young to take on such a significant political role.
Background and Education
Born and raised in Kiryandongo, Atuhura’s leadership journey began at Kigumba Centre Primary School, followed by Kigumba High School, where she was appointed head girl.
She went on to pursue her Advanced level education at East High School in Ntinda before studying at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), where she earned both a diploma in Business Administration and a degree in Commerce (Finance).
Currently, Atuhura is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at Makerere University Kampala (MUK).
Humanitarian and Leadership Efforts
Despite her youth, Atuhura has already made an indelible mark in her community and beyond. She founded the Joseline Atuhura Foundation, a community-based organization dedicated to education, sports, skills development, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) activities.
The foundation has significantly impacted local youth, particularly in schools, where it has empowered students with practical skills and resources.
Her work has earned international recognition, with awards from the United Nations for her humanitarian contributions and the Afri-Exim Bank for her knowledge of intra-Africa trade. As a USAID Youth Champion, Atuhura has advocated for access to sexual and reproductive health services, particularly for young mothers and adolescents.
Facing Criticism and Proving Doubters Wrong
Atuhura’s decision to run for Woman MP has sparked some criticism, with detractors pointing to her age as a disadvantage. They argue that she lacks the experience required to represent a district as complex as Kiryandongo.
However, Atuhura has consistently proven her critics wrong. Through her leadership roles and community projects, she has demonstrated a keen understanding of local issues and has effectively mobilized resources for development.
Her successful tenure as secretary for female youth affairs in Kiryandongo District further solidified her leadership credentials, as she worked on initiatives to improve education, entrepreneurship, and welfare for young women.
Atuhura’s candidacy is a testament to her belief that youth when given the opportunity, can drive real change. Her platform focuses on education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and gender equality, aiming to create a more inclusive future for Kiryandongo District.
Political Aspirations
As she steps forward to seek election in 2026, Atuhura is determined to continue the work of Hon. Kahunde Helen, who has served the district for three terms. If elected, Atuhura plans to prioritize legislative action, effective resource allocation, and policy development to address the pressing needs of her constituents.
Atuhura’s critics may continue to question her age, but her proven track record in leadership and community service makes it clear that she is more than capable of representing the women and youth of Kiryandongo District.
With the 2026 election season approaching, Atuhura’s announcement has generated significant interest, positioning her as a key figure to watch in the race for Woman MP in Kiryandongo District.
