Lango cultural institution vows to pursue justice after court ruling

Lira, (UG):- The Lango Cultural Institution [Tekwaro Lango] has expressed its commitment to continue seeking justice after a recent court ruling did not go in their favour.

On November 29, 2024, Justice Philip Odoki delivered a much-anticipated ruling in the case of Eng. Odongo Okune & others versus Denis Obia Acila & another.

The case involved an application to stay the execution of the judgment in the main suit, which challenged the election of Eng. MM Odongo-Okune as the Paramount Chief of Lango in March this year.

The law requires that an application to stay the execution of a judgment must be presented before the same judge who passed the original judgment.

However, Justice Philip Odoki, on November 29, 2024, dismissed the application with costs, disagreeing with the arguments presented by the applicant’s lawyers.

In response to the ruling, the Lango Cultural Institution announced its intention to appeal the decision at the Court of Appeal of Uganda in Kampala.

Patrick Okwir, the Spokesperson of Lango Cultural Institution in a press briefing said that they remain hopeful that the appellate court will deliver a verdict that addresses their concerns and brings justice to the people of Lango.

“We will pursue this matter in the Court of Appeal, where we anticipate a fair hearing and a just outcome,” Okwir said.

“Justice Philip Odoki did not agree with the submission of the applicant’s lawyers and, indeed, dismissed the application with costs,” he added.

“This leaves us with no option but to keenly follow up with the appeal at the Court of Appeal of Uganda at Kampala. It is where we anticipate to get Justice to settle the disappointment in the Odoki Judgement and Ruling, respectively.”

Okwir also emphasized the importance of unity and cohesion during this challenging time and called on clan leaders and the people of Lango to remain calm and peaceful as they work towards a unified Lango under one widely accepted traditional leader, Engineer Michel Moses Odongo Okune.
