Oyam, (UG):- Young girls have been urged to invest their time in activities that can generate financial returns, thereby improving their financial situation.
While addressing the secondary school girls at Oyam district council, the District Physical Planner, Mr Agong John Mark, encouraged the girls to explore opportunities in entrepreneurship, skill development, and education that can lead to economic empowerment.
Mr Agong said taking practical steps towards securing a stable future through practical financial planning and investment should start as early as possible for it to have meaning.
“For you to be better, it is dictated by how much time you’ve invested into doing something. Have personal ambition. Don’t sit in class and believe that you are going to get a nice job. You’ll be very poor like me. So, from a planner’s perspective, plan. Think of investment so that tomorrow you wake up and then you are that person that you want to be,” Agong remarked.
The 120 secondary school girls drawn from Acaba, Atapara and Everest schools in Oym district Supported by the Foundation for Inclusive Community Help (FICH) had visited the district planning unit, Oyam magistrate court and Uganda Prison Service-Oym.
The Leadership, Education, Access and Discovery (LEAD) Bootcamp is taking place at Acaba SS, Oyam Town Council where the students are mentored in soft skills development through the Social Emotional Learning approach
At Oyam magistrate court, the chief magistrate, his worship Benson Semondo said Sexual Harassment has remained a major Challenge and hindrance for Girls child achievement and urgent for young girls and women to report such incidents to authorities for support.
‘’Young girls of Oyam, if you face any of these sexual harassment, please report them to the nearby authority as soon as possible. Because that is a devil that is a hindrance to your success. Number two, always exercise patience. Learn to be slow. When you take it up, you will overcome and reach your goal,’’ Semondo said.
Ms Victoria Harriet Anyango, program officer Incharge of Education at FICH said the visit to those institutions was to expose the students to a number of careers that they can take on.
“Specifically, our education program helps them dream further and we ensure that we expose them to a number of careers that can help inspire them because some of them can draw their inspirations from there. we wanted them to learn about the roles, mandates and how it can support them to reach their goals as well, learn about the departments and then the units that are within their government and how all this can support them as girl children,” she said.
Ms Anyango noted that the 120 girls will graduate in December 2024 when ready to lead and inspire the community they lived in after being empowered with essential life skills through a Social-Emotional Learning approach.
