Kampala, (UG):- Speaker Anitah Among and her Deputy Hon Thomas Tayebwa Wednesday flagged off Uganda’s delegation of MPs to the East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa, Kenya.
The EAC inter-parliamentary games will take place from December 6 to 18, 2024.
“Together with the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. @Thomas_Tayebwa, we flagged off the team of Members of Parliament representing Uganda in the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa. I encouraged the team to not only actively participate but also to focus on the core purpose of these games: to strengthen, deepen, and advance the integration of the East African Community (EAC).” Hon Among posted on Wednesday afternoon.
“Through sports, let us champion our shared vision of a united and prosperous East Africa,” she added.
Hon. Asuman Basalirwa, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Sports Club, expressed confidence that Team Uganda is fully prepared to defend their title.
State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, praised Parliament’s continued commitment to sports development in the country. Ogwang noted that Uganda’s success in various sporting events reflects the growing support for sports within Parliament.
At least 3,500 MPs and their support staff from eight EAC member states are expected to converge in Mombasa.
The games will be held at six major venues in Mombasa, with additional training facilities. These include Mbaraki Stadium, which is undergoing renovation to host football, athletics, and tug-of-war, alongside Shanzu Teachers Training College.
Aga Khan Academy and KPA Makande Hall will host netball, volleyball, basketball, and darts, including events for Persons with Disabilities (PWD). Golf will be played at the prestigious Nyali Golf Club.
The games, organized annually by the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), are an important initiative to foster unity and strengthen relations among the member states of the EAC.
The EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games were first held in 2009 and have since become a vital tool for fostering camaraderie and mutual understanding among East African nations. The 2024 event aims to continue this legacy of regional cooperation.
