Speaker Among, Kenya’s Ruto open EAC Inter-Parliamentary games with curtain-raiser race

Kampala, (UG):- The 14th East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games kicked off Saturday, December 07, 2024, in Mombasa – Kenya, with a vibrant opening ceremony that saw regional leaders, including Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament Hon. Anita Among, take part in a friendly 100-meter curtain-raiser race.

The race was an exciting highlight of the event, aimed at fostering unity and cooperation among the EAC member states.

Speaker Among, representing Uganda, competed alongside Kenyan President H.E. William Ruto, Speaker of the Kenyan Parliament Hon. Moses Wetangula, and other regional dignitaries.

However, the race was not without its drama, as Speaker Among tripped and fell while competing. Despite this, the race was won by President Ruto, who was cheered on by the lively crowd.

In her remarks after the race, Speaker Among shared that she participated in the race as part of the opening festivities. “As part of the opening activities of the Inter-Parliamentary Games, I participated in the 100-meter curtain-raiser race alongside Kenya’s President, H.E. William Ruto, and other regional leaders,” she said.

“I deliberately allowed the President and Governor to win as our hosts, so the exciting atmosphere around the games is maintained,” she emphasized.

The event, which brought together lawmakers and leaders from across East Africa, is part of ongoing initiatives to strengthen people-to-people interactions through sports, culture, and music.

The event, officially opened by Speaker Among and President Ruto, underscores the importance of cross-border collaborations in building a stronger and more unified East Africa.

The games are viewed as a key pillar in fostering integration within the EAC and enhancing regional cooperation.

The Inter-Parliamentary Games also serve as a reminder of the EAC’s commitment to creating an inclusive, competitive, and interconnected regional bloc.
