Ssemakadde disowns debate promoting JSC nominees as leading candidates

Kampala, (UG):- The Uganda Law Society (ULS) President, Isaac Ssemakadde has vehemently denied the society’s involvement in an ongoing television debate organized with a purported indirect motive of promoting nominees to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) as “leading candidates” in the election race.

In a press statement released on Sunday evening, Ssemakadde noted that the debate, scheduled for Monday, December 9, 2024, at 10:00 am, is allegedly being promoted “by a Kampala-based broadcaster without the consent of the ULS Council or its Elections Committee.”

Ssemakadde expressed the Council’s disapproval of the event, stating that the promotion violates the principles of fairness, transparency, and equality that ULS stands for.

“The ULS Council strongly condemns this unauthorized promotion, which contravenes the principles of fairness, transparency, and equality that our Society upholds,” the legal rebel and champion of ULS Radical New Bar wrote.

Ssemakadde would further question the selection process used by the broadcaster to identify the so-called “leading candidates,” labeling it as unclear and lacking transparency.

“The selection criteria employed by the broadcaster to identify ‘leading candidates’ remain unknown,” he noted.

As such, Ssemakadde ordered the immediate cancellation of the debate, cautioning all stakeholders against engaging in activities that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

“We demand the cancellation of this event and instruct the broadcaster to refrain from further unauthorized promotions,” he stressed, urging candidates and stakeholders to exercise vigilance to ensure the electoral process remains free from undue influence.

To protect the legitimacy of the elections, Ssemakadde assured that “the ULS Council will take all necessary measures to safeguard the integrity of our elections and uphold the values, rights, and interests of our Society,”
