Gulu, (UG):- Gulu City youth performing arts group of actors have argued with their fellow youths to embrace drama and film as a way of nurturing their talents in drama and film and also get them busy during the long festive season holiday.
The group named The Great Acoli Cultural Movie Industry (GACUMI) made the call during a release/streaming of their latest movie titled “Obura, the Great Warrior) at Elephante Commons on Saturday night (December 7, 2024).
Lucky Aber Patricia, the Secretary of the group while speaking on behalf of their chairperson said that they are optimistic that many youths have talents in drama but they do not know how to start.
Aber said that such a group can help youths live a responsible life free from drugs and idleness through participating in something different from academics and other dealings.
She also highlighted the other importance of the arts industry that has paved the way too many people, where some have turned into renowned movie stars who are now being paid by YouTube.
Kinyera Polycarp known by his stage name as ‘Wod-Ker’, one of the actors at GACUMI said that he has been a beneficiary at the drama group in that he has learnt and mastered the art of performing arts from drama, and poetry to traditional dances and plays.
“You out those who perhaps have talents in performing Arts, especially in drama and film not to undermine your talent, but approach us so that we nurture you up for better performances,” remarked Kinyera.
Kinyera called on his fellow youths to embrace the idea and join such groups for talent development alongside their family/home tasks including academics.
Edmond Kica, one of the characters in the same movie who also acted as Obura in the movie “Obura, the Great Warrior” said that he joined the group about two years ago and he came without any knowledge in drama, but he has so far gained some degree of knowledge in acting.
Kica said he has so far contributed in four movies where he was a protagonist in some of them that has lifted his focus in drama and film.
He urged his fellow youths to embrace film and drama as it can safeguard them from some anti-social acts such as early relationships, drug and substance abuse, laziness, idleness and disorder among others, hence keeping them active while building talents.
GACUMI which now has over 30 youths is said to have started by a group of Gulu Central High School Students in early 2020 before the COVID-19 influx and they say it is nurturing young people into appreciated actors and storytellers.
