Lango Cultural Foundation unveils committee for Palace construction

The artistic impression of the proposed Lango palace

Lira, (UG):- The Lango Cultural Foundation has nominated three individuals to represent the Project Management Committee for the construction of the Lango Palace which will be constructed at the cultural institution’s land located in senior quarters, Lira City

These include; Levi Okodi Macpio – First Deputy Prime Minister, Lango Cultural Foundation, Patrick Abal – Minister of Works, Physical Planning, and Technical Services and Felix Adupa Ongwech – Minister of Science, Innovation, and Technology, and the General Secretary of the Committee nominated by Lango Cultural Foundation.

This was unveiled in a letter dated December 9, 2024, in which the Lango Prime Minister, Frederick Ogwal Oyee emphasised the need for the Lango Cultural Foundation to be directly involved in all communications and decisions regarding this project to ensure effective monitoring, evaluation, and successful execution in the best interest of Lango and government of Uganda.

Oyee’s letter, a copy of which DailyExpress has seen, is addressed to the Principal Assistant Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister, John Baptist Senduli.

Background

The development comes amidst the delayed construction of a palace for the Lango Cultural Foundation, a pledge President Museveni made during the Lango conference on December 29, 2012. The President also pledged to construct an administration block and a cultural centre for the cultural institution on the same day (2012).

In November 2014, Lira District leaders allocated a two-acre piece of land on Boroboro Road in the present-day Lira City East Division for the construction of the facilities.

On January 25, 2021, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) then contracted M/S CMD Investments Ltd to construct the palace at an estimated cost of Shs3.5b. The site was handed over to the contractor on February 20, 2021, by the fallen former Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah.

And in 2022, the late Oulanya officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lango Cultural Palace, but later on, the contractor abandoned the site for unclear reasons.
