Kapchorwa, UG:- President Yoweri Museveni, alongside First Lady Janet Museveni, Wednesday officially opened the Teryet High Altitude Training Center in Kapchorwa, a national facility aimed at enhancing Uganda’s athletic prowess.
The centre, located in the heart of Sebei, has been a key training ground for top Ugandan athletes, including Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Chemutai, and Jacob Kiplimo, who have all prepared here for international competitions.
In his address after the commissioning, President Museveni expressed his satisfaction with the region’s growth and emphasized the government’s commitment to sports development.
“The NRM does its work organically; we don’t rush into things. If you do, you won’t succeed. We haven’t accomplished much in sports yet, as our initial focus was on the basics: peace, immunization, and wealth creation,” Mr Museveni said.
The President reflected on the impressive transformation of the Sebei region, noting that its population growth has shot up, thanks to sustained efforts in public health and security.
“Now, Sebei’s population has grown from 20,000 in the 1960s to over half a million due to immunization and peace,” he said.
The president acknowledged that while the country had not yet reached its full potential in sports, the initial focus had been on more fundamental issues such as peace, immunization, and wealth creation.
“We have focused on essential services like roads and electricity. While we haven’t made direct investments in sports, the peaceful environment has indirectly benefitted the industry. As a government, we are committed to supporting our athletes on their journeys to excellence and victory.”
“We commit to supporting our dedicated athletes in achieving success. Our hard work and commitment will continue to drive progress in the sports industry.”
Museveni also pledged to address corruption within the government, particularly those involved in stealing from national athletes. “We will arrest thieves in State House who reportedly steal from our athletes,” he vowed
The Teryet High Altitude Training Centre in the Sebei Sub-Region will serve as a hub for Uganda’s elite athletes to further elevate the nation’s sporting achievements.
The region is renowned for producing world-class athletes like Moses Kipsiro, Stephen Kiprotich, Cheptegei, Kiplimo, and Chemutai, and this new facility is expected to provide them with world-class resources to enhance their training.
