Kapchorwa, UG:- President Yoweri Museveni is today, (Wednesday December 11th) set to commission the National High Altitude Training Centre in Teryet, Kapchorwa, as part of his ongoing tour in the Sebei Sub-Region.
Sitting on 75 hectares of land with an altitude of 2,200 meters above sea level, World Athletics recognized the facility on Tuesday, March 14th, 2023.
Teryet Training Centre is set to offer an ideal setting for athletes to reach peak performance in promotion of the athletic games on the country.
Phase I of the project includes several world-class features such as an athletic track, an artificial turf field, a jogging track, a hostel block, an external kitchen and dining hall, and a range of modern sports equipment.
The unveiling of the facility is part of Uganda’s broader efforts to enhance sports infrastructure ahead of co-hosting the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.
It should be noted that President Museveni in 2010 asked for the construction of a modern state-of-art training facility for athletes across the country as a recognition of Spectacular and vicious performances by Ugandan athletes internationally.
This came after persistent please from athlete Moses Kipsiro after he won gold medals in the 5000m and 10000m races at the 2010 commonwealth games.
In 2012 and 2013 long-distance running icon Stephen Kiprotich who won both Olympic and Commonwealth championships further compelled the President to have the facility put up urgently.
The Teryet state-of-the-art modern facility marks a major milestone in Uganda’s sports development and highlights the government’s commitment to nurturing athletic talent.
