Morocco to co-host 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal

Morocco has officially been confirmed as one of the hosts for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, making it only the second African nation to welcome the global football event, following South Africa’s historic hosting in 2010.

The announcement was made during an Extraordinary FIFA Congress held via video conference on Wednesday, with 211 FIFA Member Associations in attendance.

Morocco will co-host the tournament with Spain and Portugal, in a joint bid that received praise from FIFA, with an impressive score of 4.2 out of 5 during its evaluation of the required hosting standards.

Morocco’s selection highlights its progress in sports and football, reflecting Africa’s growing ability to organize world-class events. With a strong football tradition and significant investments in infrastructure, Morocco’s involvement brings pride to the continent.

The 2030 World Cup will be special not only because of Morocco’s role but also because it marks the centenary of the first World Cup, which was held in Uruguay in 1930.

According to the World Football governing body, the matches at the 2030 tourney will begin in South America, with Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay hosting the opening games. The tournament will then move to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco for the rest of the competition.

FIFA has expressed its commitment to uniting cultures through this unprecedented multi-continent hosting, making the 2030 World Cup a global celebration of football.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe congratulated Morocco for its successful bid and praised the partnership between Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. He emphasized that this collaboration unites Africa and Europe, and serves as an inspiration for global unity through sport.

“The Morocco, Portugal and Spain Partnership brings together and unites Africa and Europe through football and inspires all of us to work together and make the world a better place,” Motsepe said.

“Today is a proud day for African football as Morocco becomes only the second African country in FIFA’s history to host the FIFA World Cup. CAF is excited and congratulates Morocco and its partners Portugal and Spain,” he added

The 2030 World Cup will also expand to include 48 teams, further raising the profile of this historic tournament.
