UMSC boss Lubega elected first secretary general of East African Muslim Council

Kampala, (UG):- Prof Dr. Muhamadi Lubega Kisambira, the National Chairman of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council has been elected the inaugural and first Secretary General for the East African Muslim Councils Union, in the runup to events leading to celebrations for UMSC’s 50 years anniversary.

Dr Lubega was elected to lead the Regional Muslims council bloc for his wide knowledge exposure of the East African spectrum, statesmanship and high sense representativeness and inclusivity embedded in him. 

This was unveiles during the meeting held on Wednesday, 11th November 2024, at the UMSC headquarters, Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje who also doubles also as the Mufti of Uganda. The African Forum for Muslim Councils (AFMC) was convened with representation from Member states such as Angola, Malawi, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ethiopia, Chad among others. The forum aims at realization of an Integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.

Through a powerful concept delivered by Prof Dr. Muhamadi Lubega Kisambira at the convention, it was underscored that there was need to create regional Muslim blocs to address regional challenges, emulating the East African countries that politically constituted themselves into the East African Community (EAC) as a Regional intergovernmental organization of Eight partner states. 

Similarly, the Muftis, National Chairmen and Secretary Generals of the respective East African Community partner states that included Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania, unanimously resolved to form the Union of East African Muslim Councils (UEAMC) to be situated at Arusha in Tanzania.

In his acceptance speech, Lubega highlighted key priority areas to pursue the objectives of the newly born UEAMC. They included socioeconomic well-being of the Muslims in the region, improvement on Financial health of the UEAMC, improvement on the overall quality of UEAMC’s education services, improvement on the 

Health, Sanitation and water services, expansion of Da’awah and religious services to 130 million East African Muslims, strengthening capacity of Muslim clerics in Islamic theology, leadership, management financial and other key soft skills, and also undertaking institutional development of partner councils. 

He assured the regional leaders of widening and deepening cooperation among partner states in various spheres for their mutual benefit.

Lubega also promised to have the union fully get registered and operationalize within 12 months and also position the union as a contact and referencing point for international bodies.
