LIST: Uganda sends 16 varsities for 13th East Africa University Games in Kenya

Kampala, (UG):- This weekend, a total of 16 Ugandan universities will travel to Maseno University, Kenya, for the eagerly awaited 13th East Africa University Games, set to begin on December 16th, 2024.

The competition will see over 30 universities from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan battling it out in various sports disciplines.

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) has already flagged off its sports team, which includes basketball, soccer, and rugby. The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Patrick Kyamanywa encouraged the teams to compete with excellence, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship, persistence, and discipline.

“As our teams set out to compete, we are confident they will embody the values of integrity and resilience that define UMU,” said Prof. Kyamanywa.

Similarly, Bishop Stuart University (BSU), with a contingent of 60 students, will participate in various sports, including men’s football, volleyball, woodball, and athletics.

Prof. John F. Mugisha, the Vice Chancellor of BSU, flagged off the team and encouraged them to uphold the university’s legacy of excellence while making the university proud. “Put your faith in God and strive for victory,” he said.

Kampala University is taking part in five sports disciplines, including netball, football, handball, woodball, and athletics, with the university aiming for strong performances across the board.

Kampala International University (KIU) has confirmed its participation in the East Africa University Games from December 15th to 21st, sending teams for table tennis, basketball, karate, chess, lawn tennis, and volleyball.

KIU’s 14-year dominance in table tennis is particularly noteworthy, and the team is set to defend its title in the sport.

This year’s competition is expected to be fiercely contested, with 16 Ugandan universities confirmed, including Kyambogo University, MUBS, Makerere University, Ndejje University, and Uganda Christian University (UCU).

The games will feature football, rugby, volleyball, netball, hockey, and indoor sports like chess and scrabble.

Ugandan universities have been particularly strong in the EAUG, with Ndejje University and Makerere University securing the top spots in previous editions.

In 2022, Ndejje University emerged as the overall champion with a total of 124 medals, including 59 golds, while Makerere University finished second with 68 medals.
