PROFILE: Who is Dr Frank Nabwiso, the fallen encyclopedia of Busoga and veteran FDC politician

Jinja, (UG):- The news of the passing of Dr Frank Nabwiso, a veteran Forum for Democratic Party politician and former member of parliament for Kagoma County in Jinja District, has sent the opposition fraternity into shockwaves and grief this morning.

Dr Nabwiso who represented Kagoma County in Parliament from 2001 to 2006 on the FDC ticket died Saturday morning at Mukono Hospital after being bedridden for some time. He was 84.

Who is Dr Frank Nabwiso

Dr Nabwiso’s inspiring journey saw him rise from a Grade 3 teacher to earning a PhD in Adult Education and Rural Development.

His academic achievements and passion for education culminated in his service as the Vice Chancellor of Busoga University, where he championed higher education in the region.

In politics, Dr Nabwiso represented Kagoma County in Parliament from 2001 to 2006 under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

Nabwiso’s tenure was marked by his advocacy for democratic principles and rural development. He was unseated in 2006 by Fredrick Nkayi after a competitive race.

In 2021, he contested the Jinja City mayoral seat as the FDC flagbearer but lost to the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) Peter Kasolo Okocha.

Within the FDC, Dr Nabwiso was a prominent figure, serving on the party’s special Elders’ Council.

During the contentious allegations of bribery against top FDC officials Nathan Nandala Mafabi and Patrick Amuriat in 2021, Dr Nabwiso chaired the committee that cleared them of wrongdoing.

He also warned Dr Kizza Besigye, a founding member of the FDC, against listening to unverified rumors, advocating for unity and transparency in resolving party disputes.

Dr Nabwiso’s legacy transcends politics. He was deeply respected for his intellectual contributions and commitment to public service.

His work in academia and his unwavering dedication to democratic ideals have left an indelible mark on Uganda.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced. Dr Nabwiso’s passing marks the end of a remarkable journey of service, scholarship, and leadership.
